We regularly get called to fix repointing that was done a couple of years ago and has already failed. Nearly always, it's one of these three mistakes.
Wrong Mortar Mix
Using hard cement mortar on old, soft brickwork traps moisture inside and can actually destroy the bricks over time. The mix must suit the masonry.
Not Raked Out Deeply
Smearing mortar on the surface without raking the joint back properly means it just falls out within a season or two.
Bad Weather Conditions
Pointing in frost or heavy rain means the mortar never cures correctly. It looks fine for a few months, then crumbles.
